A Study on Basic Needs of the Aged

Abstract
This study was conducted to find out the degree of basic needs of the aged for 579 elderly people; 497 living in Seoul, Busan and Gimcheon and 82 living in Nursing Home during the period of August 10 to September 2, 1975.
Physical, social and emotional aspects of needs, and the feelings to death and dying were the main area of interest in this study. Followings are the results of the study:
1. Physical aspects of need:
As the age increased, disturbances in teeth, disturbances in digestive organs and the difficulties in body movements were expressed badly. But the visual disturbances were not become worse because of the aged.
2. Social aspects of need
1) Desire for association with the opposite sex were observed in 27.8% of the studied elderlies(41.4% in male & 20.7% in female).
2) Desire to enjoy hobbies were getting decreased as the age was increased.
3) Those who were dissatisfied with their family members showed the tendency to less discuss their problems of basic needs with their family members.
4) More male than female enjoyed to read newspapers or to listen to the radio programs. Both male and female watched the T.V. at the same rate.
5) Fifty two per cents of the respondents wanted to have social activities but the age is getting old the desire were diminished.
3. Emotional aspects of need:
Degree to sympathize for himself were in aged who live with their family members than the elderlies who live in nursing homes; those who have more difficulties in body movements; those who have no visitors in his or her birthdays or holiday seasons.
4. Worrying about death and dying:
Those who believe and practice religions tended to less worried about his or her death and dying No relationship between the degree of worrying about deat hand dying and the age increase were observed.
